Multi-mode PET technology to promote interdisciplinary preclinical imaging applications

Author: Sonica Van Wyk, brooke preclinical imaging department, NMI market product manager

Tomography is an imaging technique is widely applied in various areas, ranging from radiology and nuclear medicine, down to earth in physics and material science, and so on.

It according to the scanning object slices or projection for 3 d information, common techniques including X-ray computed tomography (CT), positron emission tomography (PET) and single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT), etc.CT scan can provide anatomical information of the object, the PET is generating function imaging, according to the spatial distribution of biomolecular activity in the body.PET is in the 1950 s as a clinical diagnosis and development of preclinical research purposes, the scope of its application for radioactive drugs (namely produce radiation medicine, usually including radioactive tracer) develop and expand.

Preclinical imaging (PCI) in the understanding of organs, tissues, cells and molecules behind the level of disease states play an important role in biological processes.PCI can clarify how the human body to respond to physical or environmental change, which is very important for looking for drugs to fight disease.By allowing researchers to understand the distribution patterns of drug in the organization, PCI to assess efficacy and safety of the new therapy is also crucial.PET in preclinical research technology enables users to to repeat the same animal experiment, provide extremely valuable data, thus reducing the institute should be the number of animals. Is also for this reason, the use of non-invasive in vivo imaging techniques to make each experiment with animal maximum value, it has become more and more important.

Multimodal CT imaging, such as PET/CT, can use function of the PET imaging and combining anatomical imaging using a CT scan.PET can also be combined with other technology, such as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), to combine functional imaging and tissue morphological imaging.PET/MR imaging before clinical application of position is higher and higher, because it provides excellent soft-tissue contrast, imaging without CT risk of ionizing radiation, can also provide multiple parameter data.
